Club History

Queens Park Athletic was founded in 1935. Its name was based on the place used for pre-season training – by the Rifle-Range next door to the Queens Park Golf Course. Matches were played here in the early years and in fact a pitch is still there. The only problem was that a path ran straight across the playing area and many a time the game almost became a farce as people insisted on their rights to cross at any time – come what may!

George Few was elected Hon Secretary at the inaugural meeting and remained until becoming the first full time Bournemouth FA Secretary in 1973. He retained this position until his unfortunate death in 1986.

From then on the Club has had mixed fortunes with periods in the premier Bournemouth league.

Senior football was attained after the Second World War, and in 1950 the Club won its first major trophy - the Page Croft Cup.

Honours achieved after the Page Croft Cup are as follows – The Bournemouth Senior Cup 1953, Hayward Cup (three times) 1982, 1987, and 2009, plus the Hampshire Junior A Cup 1983.

League Champions Saturday Div 5 1980, & Saturday Div 3 1983.

A mention must also be made of our brief foray into Sunday League in past seasons especially as the Jukes Cup was won in 1984.

Our current home pitch is at the well kept King George V Playing Fields Ferndown, where we have been playing since the mid 70’s.

Currently there are two teams competing in the Bournemouth Hayward Saturday League Divisions 3 & 6, and both are enjoying a successful season. The First Eleven achieved some notable victories in Cup Tournaments and have a good chance of achieving promotion. Meanwhile the Second Eleven remains unbeaten in the league and should attain a higher League next September.

After 75 years of football obviously many unusual and humorous events have occurred. But my favourite is the match at King George when the opposition went into a 1-0 lead before they even had a chance to touch the ball from the kick-off! Our Goalkeeper had requested that he felt the ball straight from the start (you could pass back in those days), but unfortunately he was still picking up his gloves when the ball gently crossed the goal-line.
